A goose producer is preparing for one of the busiest times of year, thanks to the revival of an old tradition.

Anne Hughes has bred about 300 birds on her farm in Layer de la Haye for the Michaelmas festival.

Michaelmas Day is celebrated on Saturday as a quarter day, when tenant farmers paid their rent.

According to custom, a goose would be offered to the landlord to stop him putting up the rent.

Interest in the Michaelmas goose is increasing again and more restaurants than ever are featuring it on the menu.

A panel of food writers recently voted Mrs Hughes's geese among the best in the country.

Mrs Hughes is a member of the British Goose Producers, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
