The general election is edging closer and closer and as David Cameron and Ed Miliband prepared for their grilling, some celebrities had a different trick up their sleeves…

An array of stars came together to launch a new campaign, Use Your Voice, hoping to raise awareness and encourage people to speak up, exercise their power to vote and really have their say about the UK’s next government.

#silencechallenge

The celeb ambassadors took a 72-hour vow of silence, tweeting only a blank message with the hashtag #silencechallenge, before launching the campaign.

So how did the likes of Matt Johnson, Lydia Bright and Adele Roberts fare in inspiring young people to let their voices be heard in the run up to the vote in May?

With all the drama that’s erupted this week, from the news of Zayn Malik’s shock exit from One Direction to the devastating Germanwings plane crash, the celebrities admitted they found it difficult to keep their mouths zipped on Twitter.

“It was really horrible. You want to have a voice on things that are going on in the world,” TOWIE’s Lydia Bright confessed.

The stars revealed they all had moments during their vows of silence where they had just wanted to scream from the rooftops, share their experiences and thoughts with the world, but their voice had been stolen.

“The world was happening around me and I wasn’t part of it, it was like I didn’t matter,” revealed Radio 1Xtra DJ Adele Roberts, highlighting as with Twitter, politics is no different.

“When you don’t vote it feels like a loss of power, if you register to vote you can make sure you’re heard.”

Registering to vote has been made easier than it ever has been and, for the first time in history, people are able to sign themselves up online to make sure they get their say on May 7.

If young people are struggling to choose a political party, Bite the Ballot are launching an advice app on April 1 to help voters compare their views and values with the political parties.

“Over 80% of the Scottish population voted in the referendum,” TV presenter Matt Johnson added.

“Imagine how scary it would be for politicians if we got 80% of people to vote – they would have to listen to us!”

Before the celebs were off they had one more surprise in store for us – #votenotes.

Hoping to spread the importance of making your voice heard in the upcoming election, the celebrities implored viewers to share a video of them holding the word “vote” on one note, before nominating their friends to do the same.

It went something a little like this…
