No need to lose sleep over name and line-up change

BAND REVIEW Sleep Patterns ONE of my favourite Colchester bands have just got better.

Misadventure by Absent Kid was one of the best albums I have had the privilege of previewing, so when I heard the band had broken up I was, to say the least, gutted.

Fortunately, I wasn’t gutted for very long, as I discovered Absent Kid had become the Sleep Patterns, losing guitarist Dom, who had emigrated to Australia, and gaining the rather wonderful Keri Butcher, who also plays with Colchester Sixth Form College band, Stand Still Kid.

Still with brothers Martin and Richard Williams at the fore, along with Craig Jeal on drums and Mark Butters on bass, the five have just returned from a brief stint with the Wales-based record producer responsible for Misadventure, Neak Young, who has worked with the likes of Funeral for a Friend and the up-and-coming the Joy Formidable. The result is the I’ve Got Your Back EP, a glorious four-track affair, showing the group’s change in musical direction to go along with a new line-up and new name.

While I would have said the band were insane to change their Radiohead-esque post rock sound for more immediate poppy tunes, listening to the likes of I’ve Got Your Back, Advantage Me, Pilot Show and the Circle Line proves me staggeringly wrong.

They launch the EP this Friday at the Twist, so don’t take my word for it – pop along for some snappy melodies, witty lyrics and great head-nodding numbers.

Tickets are £5, available on the door or in advance by calling 01206 562453.
