Essex County Council is the latest organisation to follow the apprenticeship path in its recruitment and training policy.
The council is now offering an advanced apprenticeship in procurement, one of the most active and varied functions of local authorities.
Councillor Kevin Bentley, Essex County Council’s deputy for economic growth and infrastructure, said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for young people in Essex to get their feet on the ladder towards a career in a very important area.
“As a council, we constantly get across the message that Essex means business. This is one way that we ourselves can demonstrate the fact.
“When it comes to building skills for the future, this county council wants to lead by example in supporting apprenticeships.”
Councillor Bentley added: “Procurement is an area that crosses all industries and is key to any business.”
Procurement apprentices become involved in a wide range of council fields, including construction and road-building, and the acquisition of IT equipment. They also play a key role in environmental improvement, through their work on waste recycling treatment plants. Councillor Bentley said: “They will even find themselves involved with social care departments. The job certainly offers variety.”
Apprenticeships continue to receive strong backing from the Government. The number of apprenticeship schemes doubled under the previous administration, boosted by financial support for small businesses which took on apprentices.
In March, David Cameron stressed his continued personal backing for the creation of further apprenticeships
The Prime Minister promised: “If you need help preparing for an apprenticeship or want to get straight into the world of work, we’ll help you.
Councillor Bentley said Essex County Council also fully supported the apprenticeship system.
He said: “Apprentices earn while they learn, and they do their learning in a real work environment.
“Doing an apprenticeship will also equip them with skills and knowledge for their future career.”
Applicants for Essex County Council’s advanced apprenticeship in procurement, should be over 16, must be Essex residents, and must have at least five GCSEs, including English, Maths and ICT.
As well as on-the-job experience and a salary, they will get paid holidays and gain qualifications up to the Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Procurement and Supply Operations.
The qualification is controlled by the industry body the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.
The apprenticeship starts in September 2015 and will be for 18 months.
